We were introduced to Bullmastiffs through Sue and John who had one of the largest Bullmastiff kennels at one point in their life with the breed. That was fairly common in those days but, I guess, would be frowned upon now – that’s if anyone could afford it! Sue knew the pedigree of every dog off by heart, not only in her own kennel but also most other folks. It was amazing, yet confounding, to hear her make all sorts of connections to various dogs and lines when assessing dogs at ringside! We were in awe of such a vast and well-informed knowledge base.
You can imagine how inadequate we felt after she died and we assumed responsibility for a lot of the dogs. We knew we could never hope to know what she would have done with the lines and we also know that she probably winced when she saw some of the decisions we made! However what we know she would be proud of is the love, devotion and commitment we have poured into her, and now our, beloved breed.
There is little point in us reiterating what you can read about the breed from any book or article you may access. What we can tell you about is what we have experienced in our 20 plus years of knowing and loving our bullies. You will go far to find a breed more deserving of your time and attention. They are loving, intelligent, loyal, sensitive, amusing, strong-willed, single-minded and all together just what you would want to experience of people but so rarely do!
If you are researching the suitability of the breed for your lifestyle we would refer you to the writings of some of the most knowledgeable writers on the breed such as David Hancock and Lynn Pratt. These folks know the Bullmastiff, what it was bred to do and how we must care for those indigenous characteristics which must be upheld if we are to maintain the core
qualities of our breed whether you work , show or just love on them!
