Once again we have to refer to Sue in relation to our introduction to the breed. She had just imported her first DDB from Holland and had also started to work with some fellow enthusiasts to form a breed club just before she died. Unfortunately we did not fall heir to Claude, her import boy, and did not come across the breed again until we travelled to Ireland in 2004 when we were introduced to Peri Burnside and came home with our Sorcha – what a find she was!
We adore Sorcha and we could not have hoped for a better foundation girl for our kennel. She has excellent construction and moves like a dream with the most gorgeous back end!!! Sorcha has become the matriarch of our kennel and keeps everyone in order – she is Alpha dog and only defers to us! She trains our puppies in a gentle but firm fashion and is respected by all. She is a one-off!!
So the love affair began! We showed Sorcha at several open and championship show gaining the title of Best Import Puppy 2005 – we were thrilled. Since then we have bred Sorcha and kept her daughters Amelie, KoKo and Marta. Subsequently we have had a litter from KoKo and Amelie using only the best of stud dogs and have yet again produced quality pups which can be seen in our keepers Kenzie, Callan and Cooper.
In terms of what we have experienced and love about the DDB the portfolio is full to bursting! They are so loving, so soft and gentle, so, so sensitive and an absolute joy to live and love with. However, like the Bullmastiff, this breed is not for everybody. They are powerful, can be obstinate and, like any large breed will quickly assume pack leader status unless you firmly claim and sustain that role first. Once again we would urge you to research all you can about the breed and listen to those who know – don’t just pretend to!
